Taking Good Care of Platinum Blonde Hair

 photo blonde-tips-0813_zps7dd9b831.gif

You might have noticed that I've had just about every hair-color and -style in the book!  I've been brunette, auburn (for, like, a week), highlighted, balayaged, ombre'd, and bleached.  I've had a bob, a euro-mullet and, of course, "The Rachel". Scroll down for a photo journal of just a few hairstyles I've had over the past few years.

The hair I've loved the most (and probably stuck with the longest): Platinum Blonde. I got it done back in April of 2012 and I have learned a lot so I thought I'd pass on the knowledge because I get a lot of questions about upkeep, cost, care, etc.

YOU MUST START HERE: You must go to a stylist your first time! Have you ever heard of a successful at-home bleach-job? No? Me neither. Trust me: Go to a pro. They will know exactly how to bleach you and their products are good. I highly recommend an Aveda salon.

TOUCH-UPS: There are some blondies who never let their roots show. (Google Gwen Stefani and you'll go through pages of photos without ever seeing a millimeter of roots). When I first made the switch to a "scalp bleach" I was having my roots touched up every 3 - 4 weeks. It got expensive and wasn't necessary. Once my stylist told me that I should go 6 weeks, I gave it a try and it was great! So now, every 6 (or 7) weeks is my plan. A root touch-up and tone can be expensive so I've been having Dan do my roots every-other-time. I know I know! I just told you to go to a pro but I save $100 by getting the salon treatment every 12 weeks instead of 6. If you're brave enough to do this, invest in a mixing bowl, brush, and some latex gloves. Each time you need your roots done, buy a fresh packet of bleaching powder and some developer (ask the clerk what kind you need). At the salon, pay close attention to the way your stylist touches up your roots and try to have your at-home-helper emulate the same pattern. Don't do it yourself.

UPKEEP: People are often surprised at how healthy my hair is. My hair is not over-processed and yours doesn't have to be, either! Root touch-ups are done only on the roots so most of my hair has only been bleached once. But you still have to be very gentle with bleached hair. STYLING: I rarely blow-dry or heat-style. If you cant live without either, I would ask your stylist about a good heat protecting product or a leave-in conditioner. I also limit the products I use. Hair spray dries your hair out and dry blonde means breakage so use hairspray sparingly. WASHING: I also only wash my hair about twice a week.  It can be difficult but that's where topknots and headscarves come in. I keep it fresh with dry shampoo between washes. Shampoo is really harsh on your hair. I use a gentle clarifying shampoo about once a week and always condition with a heavy-duty conditioner for dry/damaged hair.  To keep it from yellowing, I recommend a purple shampoo like Aveda's Blue Malva or a cheaper version like John Frieda or Clairol. You only need to use this once a week but it freshens up the color and helps it last longer.

And, here it is... just a few of the many faces and styles of yours truly. How embarrassing!  Have a happy Labor Day weekend, folks! Fall is just around the corner!

"Mama" ♥

Little Boy,
You call me "Mama". Sometimes you say it just to say it, I think. And always with a smile on your face. When you're in your car seat and you are bored you yell "Mama!" and you want me to tickle you. So, of course, I do. Oh, that laugh! You truly are a bundle of joy.

You love your independence but you never go far. When I walk into a room or you stop running away from me, you always greet me with "Mama" and come running full-speed into my arms. I love it. Please dont ever stop.

You are almost 2. You've counteracted your laughter and funny faces by becoming the master of whining, at times. We've had some difficult mornings. Not one person in this household of ours is a morning person so it takes a while for all of us to be happy. But the best way to wake up is when I hear you call out: "Mama!".   I love you. Happy [almost] 2nd Birthday, Peanut.

Love,
Mama

Wore: 10-Year Anniversary Date

Dan loves this romper. He wants me to wear it all the time. I have worn this romper three times: "Friendsgiving" I wore it with black tights and heels, I wore it at Mandy's Christmas party with maroon tights and wedges and I wore it to a concert with a cardigan, black tights and cute little black, lace-up, high-heeled wing-tips. I haven't worn it since I went platinum. I am hyper-aware that a bleached-blonde cant always pull off the same outfits that I used to as a dirty-blonde. Bleached-blonde just has certain connotations. I don't want to look like I'm a Barbie-wannabe, you know?

For our 10-year anniversary date, I wore the romper and that husband of mine was a happy dude. I went easy on the accessories because I don't think a bleached-blonde in a romper needs many accessories. No earrings, no necklace, just a simple gold band (my 9-year anniversary gift), my new watch and some bangles. Heels are a must when I go out with Dan. He's 8 inches taller than me. In a romper, I need heels for that extra length or my legs end up looking short and chunky. I've had these strappy heels since at least 1999. Not kidding. I think I wore them to my 9th Grade Dance.

We had planned on going to two speakeasies, a seafood restaurant, a French bar and a theater. Bad traffic, insane parking and a series of events later, we ended up in downtown Seattle, starving. So we shared a burger from Dick's (I waited in the car because you cant wear an outfit like this at Dick's at 8pm). We eventually found one of the speakeasies and while we were there we decided to ditch the rest of our plans and go to a fancy steak house down the street. It was a good choice as that meal was the best we've ever had. I dont always like how indecisive we are but I like how adventurous and spontaneous we are. It was a good night.

Thanks for the soft focus on the close-up photo, babe. I am 30.

Magisto Video Editor

I just wanted to share Magisto, an app that makes little movies on your phone. Magisto selects the best parts of your videos, adds your chosen music, themes, and effects, and splices them into beautiful little movies. I've been having wayyy too much fun with this as you will see below! It's super easy, it does everything for you: music, transitions, titles and sharing to social media. It's great for throwing together a few video clips on your phone. Check it out! The best part is that it's on Android and iPhone markets.

Not a sponsored post. I just really like Magisto.

10 Year Anniversary

I cannot believe I married this man 10 years ago! A third of my life! You know what they say, "Time flies when you're having fun!" It's true. We are best friends and we love to have fun with each other. I am so excited to celebrate this decade of marriage. In ten years we've never had more than one bathroom and that is something worth celebrating!

To celebrate, we are going to dinner and a movie and in just 5 weeks we will be on a Mediterranean cruise! To say we are excited is an understatement!

13 years of friendship, 12 years of romance, 10 years of marriage. Happy anniversary, my love! Best decade of my life!

Scroll down to enjoy one photo of us from each year, watch how much better digital photography has gotten in the past decade and see how we've aged. There's also a video - if you have a spare 7 minutes.

My 30th Birthday Pool Party

I love having a summer birthday because:  SUN. I have always had outdoor birthday parties:  water parks, lakes, camping.  For my 30th I took advantage of our friend Ruthy's pool! It was carnival themed, all based on a red and white striped bathing suit I got from Modcloth. I got Dan some red and white striped swim trunks on Ebay ($7!) and it was a hit. A very tacky hit. Because BB's swim trunks are red with white stars. Matchy-matchy! We served everything on a stick - hot dogs, fruit kebabs, caprese skewers. We ran out of food. Whoops! Never again, I promise, friends.

Sam and Ben: Dudes getting wild.
Libby just loungin with a special drink.

Beautiful cake by Corina Bakery.  Why the purple?  I have no idea but it was GOOD.

Hot dog on a stick!

The 30 Shirt!

So, now I'm 30! It's a tradition in our extended family to pass down a "30" shirt and now it's mine! Honestly, I do feel older (people said I wouldn't) but I am very happy. We get to celebrate our 10 year anniversary this week and I am even more excited about that.

I am so thankful to everyone who came out to celebrate - especially those who traveled far and wide to be here. I really felt special. Cheers to 30!
